Round Tables, Long Banquet Table or U-Shape: Which Table Shape Suits Your Wedding?
The table shape determines how your wedding feels and how much room is left for the dance floor, buffet and photo booth. Round tables feel festive, a long banquet table feels more like family. Which shape fits depends mainly on the room and the number of guests.

Round tables
Round tables of about 150 to 180 cm in diameter seat 8 to 10 people. Everyone can talk to everyone, and the look in the hall is calm and elegant. The downside is the space they take: enough room has to remain between the tables for the service staff to get through with full plates.
A good fit for: large halls, castles, hotels and weddings with many different groups of guests.
Long banquet tables
The long table, often also called banquet or tavolata style, is the most space-saving solution. Several tables are lined up in one long row, and the guests sit facing each other. It feels cozy and fits wonderfully in barns and halls.
You can only talk to your direct neighbors, though. On very long tables the far end quickly feels left out. Two or three parallel tables are often better than one very long one.
U-shape and T-shape
With a U-shape, the couple sits in the middle of the head side and can see all the guests. This suits smaller weddings of up to about 50 people. The inside of the U usually stays unused, and the service staff have to walk long distances. The T-shape is a variant with a long middle section that works well in narrow rooms.
For a hall with tables, aisles and a little dance floor, count roughly 1.5 to 2 m² per guest. Round tables are at the upper end, long banquet tables at the lower end. For exact numbers it pays to plan the room to scale.
Don't forget the aisles
At least 1.20 m should stay free between tables so that service staff and guests with wheelchairs or strollers can get through. That takes more floor space than many people think. Also plan room for the buffet, bar, gift table and the paths to the restrooms and exit.
What the venue provides
Before you commit to a shape, ask which tables the venue actually has. Many venues have only round tables or only rectangular tables. Whatever is not there has to be rented, along with matching table linens. That can quickly cost a few hundred euros. Also ask for the exact dimensions. "Round tables for ten" can be 1.60 or 1.80 meters in diameter, and at a 1.60-meter table ten people are a tight fit.
If you want to try out different shapes, lay them out side by side in the FloraWed floor planner. There you can see right away how many seats fit in the room and whether the aisles stay wide enough.
Mixed layouts
Many couples combine: a long banquet table for family and the couple, round tables for friends. This works well as long as the long table does not block the view of the dance floor.
Which table shape for how many guests?
- Up to 40 guests: one long table or a U-shape, everyone sits together.
- 40 to 100 guests: round tables or two to three long tables.
- Over 100 guests: usually round tables, because long tables can hardly be arranged sensibly anymore.
