Celebrating Your Wedding on a Budget: 12 Money-Saving Tips You Can't See in the Photos
A beautiful wedding doesn't have to cost a fortune. The big savings are rarely in the decor, but in a few basic decisions that have to be made early.

The big levers
1. Fewer guests
The most effective tip of all. Each guest quickly costs over 100 euros. More on this in the article Trimming the guest list.
2. Friday or Sunday
Many venues are cheaper on weekdays or Sundays, often considerably.
3. Off-season
April, October or even winter: prices are often lower and there is more choice.
4. Midday instead of evening
A celebration with brunch or lunch and coffee in the afternoon is cheaper than an evening with a set menu and a party until 3 am.
On food and drink
5. Buffet or barbecue
Depending on the provider, cheaper than a plated menu. Compare both, see Buffet or menu.
6. Provide the drinks yourself
If the venue allows it and the corkage is low. Buying on commission saves on leftovers.
7. A cake buffet from family and friends
Many relatives like to bake. A small cake for the cutting, the rest homemade.
On decor and stationery
8. Seasonal flowers
What is in bloom right now is cheaper. Greenery such as eucalyptus or olive branches fills a lot for little money.
9. Rent decor or buy it used
Candle holders, vases, signs: you can almost always find them in classifieds from past weddings.
10. Print the stationery yourself
You can design and print place cards, menu cards and the seating chart yourself. Instructions in the article Printing place cards yourself.
On vendors
11. A photographer only for the most important hours
Ceremony, couple photos and group pictures. Guests photograph the party late in the evening anyway.
12. A playlist instead of a DJ, if it fits
For small, quiet celebrations, a good sound system and one person to look after it is enough. With 100 guests and a wish to dance, a DJ is worth the money.
What that can mean in euros
A sample calculation, starting from 80 guests and around 150 euros per guest for food, drinks and everything that comes up per person:
- 15 fewer guests: about 2,250 euros
- Friday instead of Saturday: depending on the venue 10 to 30 percent off the hall rental, often several hundred euros
- Cake buffet from family and friends instead of from the pastry chef: quickly 300 to 500 euros
- Printing stationery yourself: 200 to 400 euros depending on scope
These are estimates that depend heavily on region and providers. But they show where the orders of magnitude lie. One decision on the guest count often saves more than ten small savings on decor combined. You can find the calculation for your own celebration in the article Cost per guest.
Where saving gets expensive
A few items look like they offer savings potential but backfire on the day itself. Too few service staff leads to cold food and long waits. A friend as photographer is cheap, but then the friend is busy all day and in no pictures. And anyone who calculates the drinks too tightly stands there at 11 pm without beer. Here it is better to cut elsewhere.
Save where you don't care. What really matters to you gets the budget. Otherwise in the end every item is mediocre.
